Larnaca Medieval Museum This enchanting and rather packed museum is situated in the fort on Larnaca's seafront. Built in 1625, the fort was mainly used as a prison during the time when the island was under British occupation. The fort is also used as the Larnaca Municipal Cultural Centre during the summer. District Museum The modern District Museum is within short walking distance of the town centre and holds a particularly good collection of items from both the Neolithic and Roman periods. The displays are particularly well lit and include some fantastic vases, coins, lamps and other tools. There are cases on the walls that hold some unusual items like scarabs, stone blocks with engravings on them and bone implements. Kolossi Castle Kolossi Castle was the headquarters of the Knights Templar 1291 - once the Crusaders were expelled from the Holy Land. The structure that stands there today, however, dates from 1454. With its thick walls and turreted battlements, Kolossi stood up very well against sieges by Mameluke and Genoese invaders. In addition to the main castle, you can see the remains of a sugar-cane factory, an aqueduct and a basilica. |
